Shalom,
Not sure who I am writing to, but I was told by my friend Daniel Samowitz that Anat's family wanted anything we had from Anat's time in Habo, and that I should pass on anything I have to this address.
I was rosh chinuch of the Sydney ken when Anat was in Habo so we worked closely together. She was the most wonderful role model, a wise woman, an inspiration and such a dear friend. She was always respected by the chanichim, madrichim and adults. She was always there for us. At the time I was studying Hebrew, and she would always want to help me improve; she was so patient and I remember that when we were both at work, we used to chat on gmail-chat and she would always type in hebrew to me so I would practice reading and understanding. I loved and adored her so much. She was the type of person you just wanted to be around; so beautiful inside and out.
Anat and I had the crazy task of planning the winter and summer camps in Sydney together. I will always remember hanging out in her room late at night with tea and hot water bottles and blankets de-briefing the day, gossiping and relaxing together. I will remember spending time at her house during mazkirut meetings, hanging out on the balcony of her apartment in Clovelly. I will remember the long drives we took together to check out campsites and meet camp owners. I will also remember meeting Amira and Anat's neice in Sydney and going to her hens night party, and how proud Anat was of her family. In the habo hanhallah we used to sing and chant to her, "A nut is not a fruit." Those are some of the many moments I had with Anat that I will treasure forever.
When Anat left our movement to return to Israel we were so upset, but knew that she was chasing an important dream and would be happier back at home with the love of her life, Hagai.
Last year I was in Israel and I met up with her for lunch; you could just tell how fulfilled she was living in Israel, being close to her family.
We wrote a song for her at her farewell in Sydney (I have pasted it below)…..I have also attached some photos from the farewell (I am the one in the green top playing the guitar) and there is also a photo of her presenting one of her famous lectures on Israeli street art.
In Sydney on Tuesday night we held a special memorial service for her at Habo house. The room was packed with bogrim, chanichim, parents, people she worked with and other members of the community – a true testemant to how many people she touched. People spoke about how beautiful she was, how intelligent she was, how even on the first day she arrived in Sydney to meet us she wore her habo chultza, how she was such a good friend, a good listener, head strong, how she was great with relating to chanichim, parents and bogrim, how she was a true zionist, a compassionate woman and just such an amazing human being. Ultimately, she came to Australia from Israel to be our Slicha and Zionist mentor, but she became so much more than that, she was our close friend.
It is so tragic and heartbreaking and none of us can believe she is gone. For Rotem to loose his mother is just so sad because she was such an incredible woman who really treasured and valued the importance of family. She would have been such a terrific mother.
My thoughts are with her family at this time, and I am sending them love, strength and support. I will miss her so much. Please let me know if you want any more information. I'll look for more photos – although Anat was always the one taking them!
Best Wishes,
Georgia (Anat knew me as porge)
Anat’s Farewell Song from the Habo Bogrim
To the tune of “Everywhere you go” by Taxi ride (a last taste of Aussie music!)
Never had a shlicha like that
That’s coz Sydney’s never had a shlicha
But we’re so glad we had you
Say you’ve got a lot of good chinuch
But it’s all on Israel’s street art
Told us to use and abuse
So if you wanna make Aliyah
She’ll hook you up (hook me up)
Israel’s about to tear you away from us
We know you’ve gotta go
Hagai is waiting
But even when you go
You’ll still be in here (point to heart)
We want you to know
That we’ll really miss
You in your Chultzah (you and your Chutzpah!)
Fly a little, take a long drive
Just to see your lover Shibolet
No projector without you.
We know you wanna make some babies
Send them on camp
Call Anat if you need a subsidy
We know you’ve gotta go
Hagai is waiting
But even when you go
You’ll still be in here
We want you to know
That we’ll really miss
You in your Chultzah
All the camps you’ve run, so much schmoozing done
We don’t know how we can thank you
Sydney’s Jews have loved Anat that’s not a fruit.
Guitar solo
(We’ll) come to the Holy land to visit you
We know you’ve gotta go
Hagai is waiting
But even when you go
You’ll still be in here
We want you to know
That we’ll really miss
You in your Chultzah
No more Mount St sun, no more Sunday fun
Leaving without liking vegemite
Last 2 years wouldn’t have been the same Bli At
We want you to know
That we’ll really miss
You in your Chultzah
